Paris Protests Against Gender-Based Violence: Demand for Justice in Pelicot Case
Protest Against Gender-Based Violence in France
A large protest occurred in Paris, where thousands of people demanded action against gender-based violence. Demonstrators gathered in front of the Louvre Pyramid, with many women participating topless to draw attention to their cause.
Protesters held signs with messages like “Stop the war on women” and “Freedom of life for women.” Police observed the protest without intervening.
Background on the Protest
The demonstration was sparked by the case of Gisele Pelicot, who was drugged and raped by her ex-husband, Dominique Pelicot, and a group of men. This incident prompted widespread anger and calls for stricter government actions against violence towards women.
Mayle Noir from the feminist group Nous Tous emphasized that anyone can be a perpetrator of violence, stating, “It is not written on anybody’s face that they are a rapist.” Men also joined the protests, showing support for the movement.
Legal Actions Against Dominique Pelicot
French prosecutors have requested a 20-year prison sentence for Dominique Pelicot. He drugged and raped Gisele while allowing her to be abused by at least 70 other men over ten years.
This prosecution follows new government measures aimed at addressing violence against women and raising awareness about drug use in sexual assaults. Assistant state prosecutor Laure Chabaud stated the sought sentence is significant but still not enough given the severity of the crimes committed.
