Wout van Aert has won the 2026 Paris-Roubaix, outprinting Tadej Pogačar in a chaotic finish to claim victory in the Hell of the North.
The victory comes as a significant shift in the race’s hierarchy, as the three-time defending champion Mathieu van der Poel saw his attempt to win a fourth consecutive edition collapse due to a series of mechanical failures and tactical errors on April 12, 2026.
The Arenberg Nightmare
Van der Poel’s race imploded on the Trouée d’Arenberg, a brutal 2.3km cobblestone sector often cited as the most decisive part of the course. With 94km remaining, the Alpecin-Premier Tech leader suffered a puncture that forced him to dismount and run along the side of the road.
While rivals Wout van Aert of Visma-Lease a Bike and World Champion Tadej Pogačar of UAE Team Emirates-XRG pressed the pace and moved ahead, Van der Poel faced a critical equipment failure. Teammate Jasper Philipsen stopped to offer his bike, but Van der Poel was unable to clip into the pedals.
The incompatibility was the result of a specific team decision. Alpecin boss Christoph Roodhooft confirmed that the team had decided to use different pedal systems in race conditions, leaving Van der Poel stranded without a compatible replacement at the most crucial moment of the event.

We rode with different pedals
Van der Poel attempted to use Philipsen’s bike, but after struggling to clip in and rolling only a few meters, he threw the bike aside in frustration. The situation was further complicated by the Alpecin team car, which was stuck in traffic and unable to reach its leader.
A Failed Recovery
In a desperate attempt to salvage his race, Van der Poel walked back against the flow of traffic to retrieve his own bicycle. Teammate Tibor del Grosso, who was in a following group, stopped to assist by swapping a fresh front wheel into Van der Poel’s abandoned bike.
Although this allowed Van der Poel to resume riding, he had already lost significant time to the front group. His misfortune continued shortly after; with 91km to go and still within the Arenberg sector, he suffered a second puncture.
Now trailing by over two minutes, the three-time champion recognized that his chances of victory had vanished. Van der Poel later stated that his race had ended in Arenberg, marking the conclusion of one of the most impressive winning streaks in the history of the race.

Of course, that came together at an incredibly bad time. I never thought it would happen
The Final Result
With the favorite eliminated, the battle for the win came down to a clash between Wout van Aert and Tadej Pogačar. Van Aert ultimately prevailed, outsprinting the World Champion to secure the title.
The 2026 edition will be remembered for the dramatic fall of Van der Poel, who had been on the verge of becoming the first rider ever to win Paris-Roubaix four times in a row.
