Welcome Party Seeks to Boost Centrist democrat Support

Lauren Harper Pope, a political consultant and Welcome Party co-founder, said WelcomeFest, which commenced Wednesday in Washington, D.C.,is the “largest public gathering of centrist Democrats.” The goal is to gather insights from Democrats who performed well and discuss “what it means to be a partisan centrist.”
Harper Pope noted the Welcome Party’s intention to emulate the progressive wing’s robust efforts. The 2025 WelcomeFest, themed “obligation to win,” features Democratic figures such as Sen. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan, Rep. Jake Auchincloss of Massachusetts,and Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington.
The event also includes notable figures like Adam Jentleson, former chief of staff for Sen. john Fetterman, Democrat of pennsylvania; Derek Thompson, a columnist at The Atlantic; and Matt Yglesias, who runs the “Slow Boring” Substack.
Harper Pope described the Welcome Party and its associated PAC as an effort to organize and support centrists within the Democratic Party, mirroring the strategies of the party’s left-leaning factions. The Welcome Party aims to support candidates in purple districts where a more liberal candidate might struggle in a general election.
Funding is a key difference. While the Justice Democrats PAC received over 25,000 donations in 2024,the Welcome PAC received only a few hundred. The majority of the Welcome PAC’s funding comes from a smaller group of donors, including James Murdoch and his wife, Kathryn Murdoch, who contributed $2.5 million in 2024, according to FEC filings.
Other major donors include LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman, who donated $671,000, and samuel Walton, grandson of Walmart founder Samuel Walton, who donated $825,000.Joshua Bekenstein, co-chairman of Bain Capital, and his wife, Anita Bekenstein, collectively donated $375,000.
harper Pope said the goal, similar to that of centrist think tanks like Third Way, is to connect with voters where they are. A recent Gallup poll indicated that 45% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning moderates want the party to move toward the center.
“We want to be representative of the party and I think the majority of those voters are people who are less progressive,” Harper Pope said. “If the centrist faction of the Democratic party can be strong, robust and vibrant, it can help us not only win more elections but also help us have the liberal democracy we aspire to.”
