pasadena Immigration Raid Causes Elementary School Lockdown
Federal agents detained six people in Pasadena, Calif., on Wednesday during an immigration enforcement operation, according to the National Day Laborer Organizing Network. The immigration raid prompted a lockdown at a local elementary school.
The incident occurred near Orange Grove Boulevard and Los Robles Avenue, where agents detained several individuals at a bus stop. Video footage captured the scene. The role of ICE in the community is now under scrutiny.
NDLON organized a vigil to support those detained and to protest the Trump management’s immigration policies.
“Another six workers taken, another six families devastated, another area of our city and community terrorized by the cruel aggression of the Trump administration,” said Pablo Alvardo, NDLON’s co-executive director. ”The children and teachers of the elementary school locked themselves indoors today, seeking shelter from the chaos and violence brought to their peaceful community by armed men in masks.”
The specific school affected was not identified, though two schools are located near the site of the operation. The role of local law enforcement during the immigration raid is unclear.
Janice Hahn, chair of the Metro board, criticized the Pasadena operation.
“The way that ICE is going about these sweeps is terrifying people,” Hahn said. “We have already seen kids not going to school, people avoiding shopping, church, and even going to work… The fear they are spreading is doing profound harm in our communities.”
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), in a statement, did not confirm the Pasadena operation.
“U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and agents are on the streets every day, prioritizing public safety by locating, arresting, and removing criminal alien offenders and immigration violators from our neighborhoods,” ICE said. “All aliens in violation of U.S. immigration law may be subject to arrest, detention and if found removable by final order, removed from the U.S.”
