Dhaka: A boat caught fire during a voyage in Bangladesh. 39 people died in the accident. More than 100 people were reported injured. The incident took place on the Suganda River in southern Bangladesh.

A three-storey MV Abhijan-10 boat carrying 500 passengers from Dhaka to Barguna caught fire. The accident happened on Friday morning. The first fire was in the engine room of the boat. People were jumping into the water when the fire broke out. Many were missing and some drowned, the report said. The death toll could rise further, the BBC reports, citing locals.

The boat, owned by Hum Jalal Sheikh, caught fire. A passenger who survived the crash told AFP that many of the passengers were asleep at the time of the fire. Rescue operations are continuing in the area.
