Mel Gibson is preparing to film a sequel to his controversial 2004 film, “The Passion of the Christ,” titled “The Resurrection of the Christ.” The film, which will be released in two parts, aims to depict the events following Jesus’ resurrection, including a depiction of his visit to Hell. Production is currently underway in Italy, with a planned release for the first part on March 26, 2027 and the second part on May 6, 2027.

The original “Passion of the Christ” grossed $612 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing film on the subject of religious themes and specifically, Easter week observances. It was also notable for receiving an R rating – a designation typically reserved for films with mature content – due to its intense violence.

The sequel is already generating controversy, mirroring the reactions to the first film, which faced criticism for its graphic violence, accusations of antisemitism, and perceived historical inaccuracies. Gibson, who has faced his own share of public scrutiny, is co-writing the script with his brother Donal Gibson and Randall Wallace, who previously penned the screenplay for “Braveheart.”

A Controversial Production

According to reports, “The Resurrection of the Christ” will take significant creative liberties with biblical accounts due to the limited information available about the period following Jesus’ resurrection. Gibson has described the film as an “acid trip,” suggesting a surreal and unconventional approach to the subject matter. The film will explore the fall of angels and Jesus’ descent into Hell before his return to Earth.

A Controversial Production

Adding to the controversy, the production has enlisted Carlo Maria Viganò, an archbishop excommunicated by Pope Francis for his views on immigration and the Agenda 2030, as a religious advisor. Both Viganò and Gibson identify with the “sedevacantist” movement, which rejects the authority of the current papacy, believing the Catholic Church has been corrupted since the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s.

A New Cast Takes on Iconic Roles

Unlike the first film, “The Resurrection of the Christ” will feature a new cast. Jaakko Othonen will portray Jesus, replacing Jim Caviezel, while Mariela Garriga will take on the role of Mary Magdalene, previously played by Monica Bellucci.

The film is being shot at Cinecittà Studios in Rome, the same location used for the original “Passion of the Christ.” Filming will also take place in several ancient towns in southern Italy, including Matera, Ginosa, Gravina Laterza, and Altamura.

The project represents a significant undertaking for Gibson, aiming to build upon the success and notoriety of the first film. Whether “The Resurrection of the Christ” will resonate with audiences in the same way remains to be seen, but it is already shaping up to be one of the most talked-about religious films in recent memory.
