Animal Welfare Week: Tsurumi Dog Club Promotes Community and Pet Care
September 20th to 26th marks Animal Welfare Week, a period dedicated to raising awareness and deepening understanding of animal welfare and proper care.
Tsurumi Dog Club: A Community for Dog Lovers
In Tsurumi Ward, the Tsurumi Dog Club brings together dog enthusiasts to address local issues, such as protecting dogs and beautifying the town.
Established three years ago, the club was founded by three individuals, including director Masaya Moteki, who sought to create a community where dog lovers could come together to watch over the local area and engage in pet disaster prevention and protection activities.
The club’s activities include picking up trash on walks and conducting patrols. “Even a small violation of manners, such as cleaning up dog droppings, can give a bad impression to dog lovers as a whole. We hope to raise awareness of improving manners as well.”
Club Activities and Goals
With approximately 200 members, the club values loose connections through social media, providing information on lost pets and proper pet care.
The club plans to consider activities unique to the dog club, such as crime prevention, monitoring activities, and a mobile version of ‘Children’s 110’, in addition to dog protection and pet disaster prevention.
The club also sells calendars of rescued dogs on its online shop, donating a portion of the sales to protection groups. Director Motegi-san has been personally involved in dog protection activities for many years and takes care of several rescued dogs at home.
Creating a Community for People and Dogs
“Rather than trying to do something difficult, I would like to create a community where people in the community can connect through dogs, help each other, and live happily and safely with both people and dogs.”
An event is planned for December at Mitsuike Park. The club is currently recruiting members and encourages interested individuals to check their website for more information.
