MANILA - President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has expressed strong support for San Miguel Corporation (SMC) Chairman and CEO Ramon Ang’s proposal to address chronic flooding in Metro Manila, underscoring the crucial role of private sector involvement in national advancement. The President emphasized that collaborative efforts are key to overcoming long-standing infrastructure challenges.
Addressing Metro Manila’s Flood Crisis: A Public-Private Partnership
During a recent briefing with reporters at Malacañang, President Marcos revealed that Ang had previously presented a detailed plan focused on the extensive desilting of waterways throughout the National Capital Region (NCR). This initiative aims to improve drainage and mitigate the impact of heavy rainfall, a frequent cause of disruption and economic loss in the densely populated metropolis.
However, the President cautioned that the success of any desilting project hinges on a complete solution to the region’s persistent garbage problem. He explained that clogged drainage systems, caused by improperly disposed waste, severely limit the effectiveness of infrastructure improvements.
“It simply doesn’t work until we have a solution to the garbage problem,” Marcos stated, highlighting the need for a multi-faceted approach. He pointed to the waste-to-energy project proposed in the City of Manila as a potential blueprint for other urban centers, offering a sustainable method for waste management and energy generation.
Credibility and Collaboration: Leveraging Expertise for National Progress
President Marcos expressed confidence in Ang’s ability to deliver on the proposed initiative, citing SMC’s proven track record in completing large-scale infrastructure projects on time and within budget. This history of successful execution lends important credibility to the proposal.
The President also welcomed a suggestion from Senator Panfilo Lacson to engage other prominent business leaders in disaster-mitigation efforts. he noted that the Philippines’ leading tycoons have consistently stepped forward to support national development initiatives.
“This is not anything new. The so-called Taipans of the country, when we have something to do, they are really offering. So they help a lot,” Marcos remarked, acknowledging the ancient willingness of the private sector to contribute to the nation’s progress. He views this collaborative spirit as essential for tackling complex challenges and achieving sustainable growth.
The Importance of Integrated Solutions
The President’s remarks signal a shift towards greater public-private partnerships in addressing critical infrastructure needs. While government investment remains vital, leveraging the expertise, resources, and efficiency of the private sector can accelerate project implementation and improve outcomes.
Successfully tackling Metro Manila’s flooding requires a holistic strategy that combines infrastructure improvements, effective waste management, and strong collaboration between government agencies and private sector stakeholders. The President’s openness to innovative solutions and his recognition of the private sector’s vital role are encouraging steps towards a more resilient and sustainable future for the nation’s capital.
