PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania fencing programs concluded their regular season Sunday, February 22nd, at the Temple Invitational held at the Liacouras Center.
The Quakers recently competed at the Ivy League Championships at Princeton earlier this month, where both the men’s and women’s teams finished fifth overall.
Freshman Simon Lioznyansky led the Penn men at the Ivy Championships, earning First Team All-Ivy honors with a tied third-place finish in epee. Junior Joseph Wu secured Second Team All-Ivy recognition, tying for fifth place in the same weapon. Freshman Conrad Lo placed seventh in foil, and Antonio Heathcock tied for ninth in saber, completing the Quakers’ top-ten finishers on the men’s side.
For the women, juniors Grace Hu and Victoria Kuznetsov tied for seventh place in epee. Freshman Lila Paul rounded out the Red and Blue’s top-ten performances with a ninth-place finish in saber.
Looking at individual season records, freshman Lioznyansky currently leads the men’s epee squad with a 37-12 record. Ben Kogan paces the saber athletes at 37-20, while freshman Lo leads the foil team with a 27-13 record.
On the women’s side, junior Hu boasts a 53-19 record in epee, Leah Blum leads the saber athletes at 35-12, and Kimberley Jang heads the foil team with a 34-25 record.
The Temple Invitational marked the final regular season competition for both the Penn State and University of Pennsylvania fencing teams. Penn State also competed at the invitational, facing opponents including Temple, Stevens University, Princeton, University of Pennsylvania, St. John’s University and Johns Hopkins University. Competition began at 8:30 a.m. With the women’s team fencing against Temple and the men’s team fencing against Stevens University.
Penn State’s men’s team is currently ranked No. 7 in the NCAA men’s fencing rankings.
Representing Penn State in foil for the men were Spencer Burke, Matthew Gonzalez, Dusan Zeljkovic, Yaroslav Muruhin, Julian Chin, Tit Nam Cheng and Alessio Fukuda. The women’s foil team consisted of Samantha Catantan, Clarisse Tan, Thea Fernandes and Eden De La Cruz.
Fencing epee for the Penn State men were Tingwei Xu, Sultan Hassan, Zachary Suico, Mohamed Yassin, Sebastian Bonomo and Joshua Yavorovskiy. Allegra Cristofoletto, Yuna Tamura, Sophia Abashidze and Lena Gyenes fenced epee for the Penn State women.
Michael Nil, Tyson Deck, Neil Lilov, Carlos Fernando Chacon and Kamar Skeete fenced saber for the Nittany Lions, with Skeete making his season debut at Temple. Stephanie Jen, Eunyu Kim, Eve Scott, Mia Novick, Emma Holmes and Amelis Baker fenced saber for the Penn State women.
