Brennan acknowledged the impact on patients and families, reaffirming Penn Medicine’s commitment to a welcoming environment and comprehensive support for LGBTQ+ individuals while adhering to federal requirements. The policy change comes amid ongoing debates surrounding access to gender-affirming care and transgender rights.
Philadelphia City Councilmember Rue Landau criticized Penn Medicine’s decision. Landau emphasized the importance of gender-affirming care, calling it “life saving healthcare for young people.”
This is crucial. This is the healthcare we provide. Life saving healthcare for young people. That’s what it is.
The announcement follows accusations by the Trump administration that the University of Pennsylvania violated Title IX by allowing a transgender swimmer to compete on the women’s team. The administration also reportedly suspended $175 million in federal funding for Penn over its decision to let Lia Thomas compete.
What’s next
The long-term effects of this policy shift remain to be seen,as advocates and healthcare providers assess its impact on transgender youth seeking gender-affirming care. Further legal and political challenges related to transgender rights and healthcare access are anticipated.
