The U.S. Department of Defense has launched the Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS) Marketplace, a digital catalog designed to accelerate the acquisition of defensive drone technologies for military, federal government, and law enforcement personnel. Developed by Kaizen Laboratories for the Joint Interagency Task Force-401 (JIATF-401), the platform allows users to compare performance data and prices for validated systems, including jammers and kinetic weapons, according to Business Insider.
Kaizen Laboratories Contract and Platform Features
The Pentagon awarded Kaizen Laboratories a $15 million contract in May to build and operate the marketplace. The current version of the platform went live two weeks ago and was developed from a blank slate in less than nine weeks, according to Kaizen CEO Nikhil Reddy.
The enhanced marketplace includes a library of permits and forms, as well as a planning tool. Reddy stated that users can describe a specific threat and identify systems that fit their budget, receiving AI-generated recommendations across the kill chain.
Several vendors with approved systems, including AeroVironment and Anduril, have already listed products on the site. Other vendors can submit product information for approval by the task force, and the platform will be accessible to U.S. partners and allies.
Addressing Acquisition Speed and Military Readiness
Defense officials stated that the C-UAS Marketplace is intended to bypass traditional weapons acquisition processes, which they described as slow, fragmented, and difficult to navigate. The initiative is part of a broader Pentagon effort to move commercially developed technology into the field more quickly.
Nikhil Reddy told reporters that current software layers used to discover and procure systems are behind the pace of evolving threats. Reddy characterized the existing disconnected application systems as a critical readiness problem for the armed forces, noting that delays in deployment can result in a loss of life.
Brig. Gen. Matt Ross, director of JIATF-401, stated in a press statement that the proliferation of small drones poses a threat to both defense critical assets and critical infrastructure. Ross said the marketplace allows the U.S. to share equipment and best practices globally to address these threats.
Strategic Context and the Influence of Global Conflicts
The push for a streamlined marketplace follows experiences in the U.S. conflict with Iran and the war in Ukraine. American and allied forces have used large numbers of expensive munitions to intercept Iranian Shahed drones, creating a need for more prolific and cheaper counter-UAS equipment.
The necessity for layered defenses was highlighted during the early days of the war with Iran, when six U.S. soldiers were killed by a drone attack in Kuwait. These events have underscored the requirement to defeat inexpensive threats without relying solely on costly missiles.
The U.S. system mirrors the function of Ukraine’s Brave1 Market, an Amazon-style platform where local manufacturers post drones and counter-drone capabilities. In the Ukrainian model, military units purchase equipment and provide ratings and reviews.
According to the Ukrainian defense ministry, the Brave1 Market has reduced average delivery times for in-stock products to front-line troops from 10–14 days down to eight days.
U.S. Army Maj. Mike Hapner, the C-UAS marketplace lead for JIATF-401, stated in a press statement that the partnership with industry creates a streamlined and trusted pathway for the Joint Force and domestic law enforcement to acquire validated technologies.
