A 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Peru on Monday, causing widespread panic and resulting in at least one fatality. The earthquake in Peru, felt strongly in Lima and Callao, has prompted authorities to assess damage and provide aid to affected areas.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the earthquake’s epicenter was located 14 miles southwest of Callao, west of Lima. The seismic event, which occured at 11:35 a.m. local time, sent residents fleeing into the streets.
Tragically,a 36-year-old man died in northern Lima when a wall collapsed from a fourth-story construction site,striking him while he stood outside his vehicle.Police Col. Ramiro Clauco confirmed the death to RPP radio.
In addition to the fatality, five people sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at local hospitals. The emergency Operations Center also reported damage to roads and educational facilities.
President Dina Boluarte is traveling to Callao to oversee the response efforts, according to a statement from the Peruvian presidency. Local media outlets have shared images of damaged homes, collapsed billboards, and vehicles struck by falling debris.
Hernando Tavera, executive president of the Geophysical Institute of Peru, noted that the earthquake was felt throughout all of Lima’s districts. The tremor also briefly interrupted a professional soccer match at Alberto Gallardo Stadium and a mass at Lima’s cathedral.
