SARASOTA, Fla. – The early days of Spring Training are often about acclimation, finding a rhythm and building connections. For Pete Alonso, the newest member of the Baltimore Orioles, it’s also been about making noise – literally. Reports from Ed Smith Stadium indicate the five-time All-Star has been the most vocal player in camp, a characteristic that’s already resonating with his new teammates.

As right-handers Dean Kremer and Shane Baz began live batting practice on Wednesday, Alonso gathered his fellow Orioles hitters in the first-base dugout. The scene, as described by MLB.com, wasn’t subtle. “The Polar Bear couldn’t be missed, putting on his helmet while wearing a black Orioles cap,” the report stated. This isn’t merely a case of a new player trying to make an impression. it’s a demonstration of the leadership and energy the Orioles are hoping Alonso brings to the table.

Alonso’s vocal presence extends beyond the dugout. He’s been actively involved in pitchers’ fielding practice, working on scooping grounders and making quick flips to cover first base. This willingness to engage and contribute immediately has been noticed. Orioles manager Craig Albernaz emphasized the importance of having fun while working hard, and believes Alonso embodies that spirit. “Baseball is fun, we want to have fun, but we want to work hard and we want to get after it. Pete does that the best,” Albernaz said. “It’s the energy we need.”

The Orioles are banking on that energy translating to on-field success. Coming off a 75-87 season and a last-place finish in the American League East, the team is looking to take a step forward. Alonso, with 264 career home runs in seven seasons with the New York Mets, represents a significant offensive upgrade. His arrival isn’t just about the power he brings to the lineup; it’s about the expectation that his experience and competitive drive will elevate the entire team.

Teammate Jackson expressed confidence in Alonso’s ability to integrate and lead. “I think that when we bring somebody into our org who has had success like he’s had, it’s easy to buy in and stand behind him,” Jackson said. “It’s fun to have him up there, and it keeps things loose. I think we’re all excited to play and go win some ballgames this year.”

Alonso himself seems to understand the importance of quickly establishing a rapport with his new teammates. He’s been obliging fans with autographs, taking the time to chat and connect with those who have come out to watch Spring Training. A TikTok video posted on January 23, 2026, showed Alonso playfully attempting a Baltimore accent, further demonstrating his willingness to embrace the local culture and connect with the fanbase.

On February 11, 2026, Alonso also showcased his hitting prowess during live batting practice, connecting for a home run against pitcher Shane Baz, as reported by Jake Rill on Twitter. This early display of power is a promising sign for the Orioles, who are eager to see Alonso in game action.

The Grapefruit League opener is scheduled for February 20th against the New York Yankees at Ed Smith Stadium. While it remains to be seen whether Alonso will be in the starting lineup for that game, his presence will undoubtedly be felt throughout the Orioles’ spring schedule. Alonso’s focus is on getting his timing down and preparing for Opening Day on March 26th at Camden Yards.

“You really get to kind of see where you’re at, especially if you’re not seeing anything moving at you hard for four months,” Alonso explained. “You can try and replicate all you can, whether it be the pitching machine or drills or whatever you have in the cage, but it doesn’t resemble someone going up there trying to get you out. You just can’t replicate it.”

Alonso’s approach is simple: show up, work hard, connect with people, and produce. He believes that if he can do those things, success will follow. For the Orioles, the hope is that Alonso’s leadership, energy, and power will be the catalyst for a return to the postseason – and, a championship run. The early signs from Spring Training suggest that the Orioles may have made a significant addition to their roster, both on and off the field.
