Phil Foden has emphatically stated he isn’t aiming to simply fill the void left by Kevin De Bruyne’s departure, but rather to rediscover the exceptional form he displayed just two seasons ago. The Manchester City star is focused on returning to the level that saw him crowned PFA Player of the Year.
A Dip in Form and City’s Struggles
Foden enjoyed a sensational 2023/2024 campaign, exploding onto the scene with 27 goals and 13 assists. This stellar performance earned him the prestigious PFA Player of the Year award. Though, the following season saw a noticeable decline in his output, managing only 13 goals and seven assists.
This drop in performance mirrored Manchester City’s own struggles. For the first time in eight seasons, the club finished outside the top three in the english League and failed to advance to the Champions League knockout stages – a significant underperformance for the reigning champions.
Squad Refresh and Foden’s Role
The disappointing season prompted a squad refresh at Manchester City, with several key players departing, including the influential Kevin De Bruyne. Foden was naturally seen as a potential replacement for the Belgian superstar, but the England international is keen to chart his own path.
“I’m not sure where the manager will play me this season, I can really play in several different positions, but everyone knows my position is inside, on the wings, so we’ll see what happened,” Foden explained to one Football.
Focused on Personal Best, Not Replacement
Foden was clear in his ambition: he isn’t trying to replicate De Bruyne’s impact.”I’m not here to repeat what Kev is doing, because we all know how good he is and what he has done to the club,” he stated.
Instead, his focus is firmly on personal improvement and regaining his previous peak. “This is only about working on the best, reaching the level where I win the Player of the Year, I want to go back ther anyway. You just practice and rediscover your performance, this is what I am being pursued,” the 24-year-old footballer added with determination.
Foden’s commitment to self-improvement and his clear ambition signal a positive outlook for both the player and manchester City as they look to bounce back from a challenging season. He understands the expectations and is ready to meet them, not by stepping into someone else’s shoes, but by becoming the best version of himself.
