Phil Spencer is stepping down as CEO of Microsoft Gaming after a 38-year tenure with the company, a move that signals a significant shift in leadership for the tech giant’s gaming division. The announcement, made on February 20, 2026, comes as Microsoft navigates a challenging period for its Xbox business, marked by declining revenue and increased competition.

Asha Sharma, currently President of Microsoft’s CoreAI product, will succeed Spencer as CEO of Microsoft Gaming. Sharma joined Microsoft in 2024 after a stint as Chief Operating Officer at Instacart and a Vice President role at Meta, bringing with her a background in scaling large consumer-facing platforms. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella highlighted Sharma’s experience in building and growing platforms, aligning business models, and operating at a global scale as critical for leading the gaming business into its next phase.

The leadership reshuffle doesn’t stop there. Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, has been promoted to Chief Content Officer, reporting directly to Sharma. This elevation suggests a continued emphasis on content creation and the management of Microsoft’s extensive portfolio of game studios, which includes names like Bethesda, Activision Blizzard, and King. Notably, Sarah Bond, the current President of Xbox and widely considered a potential successor to Spencer, is resigning from Microsoft to pursue other opportunities.

Spencer’s departure marks the end of an era for Xbox. He joined Microsoft in 1988 and became deeply involved with the Xbox brand since its launch in 2001. He assumed full responsibility for Microsoft’s gaming efforts in 2013, becoming Executive Vice President of Gaming in 2017 and CEO of Microsoft Gaming in 2022. His tenure is largely defined by two key strategic initiatives: the creation of Xbox Game Pass and a series of aggressive studio acquisitions.

Game Pass, launched in 2017, fundamentally altered the way many consumers access games, offering a subscription-based library of titles akin to a “Netflix for Games.” This model aimed to broaden Xbox’s reach beyond traditional console sales and foster a recurring revenue stream. The acquisition spree, beginning in 2018 and culminating in the 2023 $68.7 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard King, dramatically expanded Microsoft’s gaming portfolio, bringing iconic franchises like Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, and Candy Crush under the Xbox umbrella.

Despite these efforts, Microsoft’s Xbox division has faced headwinds in recent years. The company has struggled to gain market share against competitors like Sony’s PlayStation and Nintendo’s Switch during the current console generation. Recent financial reports indicate a decline in Xbox revenue, with a nearly 10% drop in the December quarter, a steeper decline than anticipated. Microsoft also announced an unspecified impairment charge in its gaming business in January 2026, and has implemented widespread layoffs. The company has also increased prices on both its consoles and Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions, moves that are unlikely to bolster its position in a competitive market.

Sharma inherits a complex situation. While Microsoft possesses a wealth of intellectual property and a robust subscription service, it faces significant challenges in hardware sales and overall market competitiveness. In her announcement, Sharma indicated a focus on continuing to develop “great games,” recommitting to core Xbox fans, and exploring “new business models and new ways to play.” However, the specifics of her strategy remain unclear.

Spencer, in a statement shared on X, expressed his confidence in Sharma’s leadership, noting her “curiosity and a real desire to strengthen the foundation we’ve built.” He acknowledged the talent and dedication within the Xbox teams and expressed optimism for the future of the Xbox communities. He will remain with Microsoft as an advisor through the summer to ensure a smooth transition.

The changes at Microsoft Gaming represent a pivotal moment for the company’s gaming ambitions. Sharma’s background in AI and platform scaling suggests a potential shift in focus towards leveraging new technologies and expanding the Xbox ecosystem beyond traditional console gaming. Whether she can successfully navigate the challenges facing the Xbox division and restore its competitive edge remains to be seen.
