Philippine Army to Increase South China⁣ Sea Role

The Philippine army is preparing to deploy a contingent to support law enforcement units on islands ‌occupied by the Philippines in ​the South ⁤China Sea. This ​strategy ⁣reflects ManilaS​ evolving defense ‍policy, shifting⁤ from internal ‍security to protecting its⁤ maritime territories.

Lt. Gen. Roy Galido, the Philippine army’s‌ chief, said ​Tuesday that troops are ready for rapid ⁤deployment adn can operate effectively in diverse environments. The army⁣ has approximately‌ 150,000 active personnel and 1.2 million reservists.

“We’re ready,” Galido said. “Based ⁤on our exercises,the army right now is highly mobile and very agile. A battalion size can always⁤ be lifted at ‍any ‍time and⁣ can be brought‍ to any‍ place in our country.”

Currently, only ‍Philippine ⁣Navy personnel and a few coast guard‌ members are stationed on ‍nine features within ⁤the Kalayaan Island Group. These include Pag-asa Island, Parola Island, Ayungin Shoal, Lawak Island, Kota Island, and‌ Likas Island Reef.

Though, some analysts caution that this ⁤increased military presence could be viewed by Beijing as an escalation, potentially leading⁣ to more​ assertive actions from the Chinese navy and coast guard.
