The stunning finale of the Phuket Vegetarian Festival took place today, October 22, at the revered Kathu Shrine. The shrine, which dates back centuries, is considered the birthplace of the vegetarian tradition in Phuket. The day began with a procession of illuminated floats stationed outside Makro Phuket Department Store on Wichit Songkhram Road, Mueang District. Along the sides of the road, eager spectators arranged tables adorned with images of the Buddha to receive divine blessings. A considerable number of both local and international tourists gathered to witness this awe-inspiring parade.

Monastic Procession at Kathu Shrine

At Kathu Shrine, the monks embarked on their procession, accompanied by riders on horseback and wielding legendary weapons. These dedicated individuals willingly subjected themselves to physical torture as a symbolic act of absorbing misfortunes on behalf of those observing the vegetarian tradition. Implements such as dahlia flower stems, swords, and sharp iron played integral roles in this ritual.

The Shrine of Phuket’s Veggie Eating Tradition

Kathu Shrine proudly holds the distinction of being the birthplace of the Phuket veggie eating tradition. Originating in 1825, this time-honored practice has persisted for over 199 years, faithfully preserving all of its original customs and rituals.

Concluding Day Tomorrow

The Yom Kippur tradition of vegetarian eating will conclude tomorrow, October 23. The morning will witness a grand procession of monks at the Lor Rong Shrine, followed by each shrine participating in the annual Herbal Festival conducting a ceremony to send up the Buddha Prince and Jade Emperor Songde at Kiew Tian Keng Shrine. This ritual will take place in front of the Plai Laem Saphan Hin beach area in Mueang District, fondly referred to as “Song Phra.”
