IMOLA, Italy – Oscar Piastri claimed pole position for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, marking his third career pole in formula 1 and his first at the Imola circuit. The McLaren driver navigated a challenging qualifying session punctuated by multiple interruptions too secure the top spot.
“That was awesome,” Piastri said following his qualifying run. “It went very well, but it was hard wiht all these interruptions.”
Qualifying Session Marked by Accidents and Delays
The qualifying session was far from straightforward, with incidents involving Yuki Tsunoda and Franco Colapinto bringing out red flags and causing important delays. Tsunoda’s accident in Q1 brought the session to a halt after only five minutes. The Japanese driver was reported to be unharmed, but was taken to the medical center for evaluation, a standard procedure after impacts exceeding 15g.
Colapinto later crashed in the Tamburello corner, causing further delays as crews worked to repair the damaged barriers. Alpine team officials were penalized for releasing Colapinto’s car prematurely before the restart was officially announced.
Piastri noted the difficulty in managing the Pirelli tires, particularly the C6 compound. “These tires were the trickiest; none of us had experience with the softest mixture C6. We managed to bring the car to the best working window,in the end everything was fine.”
He also alluded to traffic issues during his final run. “Of course that was not [ideal]. On my last round I had to overtake four cars!”
Ferrari Struggles on Home Turf
The session proved disappointing for ferrari, with both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton failing to advance beyond Q2. This result was a blow to the Tifosi, the passionate Ferrari fans, who had hoped to see their team perform well on home soil.
