The Pittsburgh Steelers training camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, faced an abrupt interruption when a massive fight broke out among players, according to local news reports and team coverage.

The altercation forced head coach Mike McCarthy to end practice early, marking a turbulent stretch during the annual summer sessions. According to Yahoo Sports, McCarthy announced the decision to shut down the remainder of the workout following the heated on-field brawl.

A Historic Latrobe Return Under New Leadership

According to CBS News, players reported to Saint Vincent College for the start of the 2026 NFL season, continuing a tradition that spans nearly six decades. The 2026 camp marks the 59th consecutive season the Steelers have held their summer workouts in Latrobe.

This year also represents a major shift in the franchise’s leadership. According to CBS News, this is the first training camp since 2007 that Pittsburgh has arrived at Saint Vincent College with someone other than Mike Tomlin serving as head coach, following the January hiring of Mike McCarthy.

While the historic venue remains a staple of the franchise, the living arrangements in the college dorms continue to draw mixed reactions from the players. According to reporting highlighted by Sports Illustrated, former and current players have occasionally voiced complaints about the spartan setup.

On an episode of Cam Heyward’s Not Just Football podcast featuring former Steelers edge rusher Bud Dupree, co-host Hayden Walsh joked about the stark appearance of the dorms, noting the white cinder blocks visible during video recordings, according to Sports Illustrated. Dupree, now with the Los Angeles Chargers, remarked that his preferred training camp was the 2020 COVID-19 year when players stayed at their own homes, stating, I hated the dorms. Hated it, as reported by Sports Illustrated.

Heyward added that the team had hoped a deep postseason run that same year would convince owner Art Rooney II to permanently alter the team’s training camp location, telling Sports Illustrated, Mr. Rooney, we won a Super Bowl, we don’t need to go back to Latrobe. Despite the lighthearted grievances from players, the franchise maintains its long-standing custom of isolating the team in Latrobe to build chemistry and foster player rapport away from team headquarters.

According to CBS News, the first padded practice is scheduled for August 3, while the traditional Friday Night Lights session has been replaced by a Saturday night practice slated for 6 p.m. on August 8.

Free parking is available at the lot entrance located near the intersection of Saint Vincent Drive and Brouwers Road, with parking lots opening at 8:15 a.m. and gates opening at 8:30 a.m. ahead of morning practices, according to CBS News.
