GRADO,Brazil – A small plane carrying 10 people crashed into buildings in the heart of Gramado,Brazil,on sunday,killing all on board and injuring at least 17 people on the ground. The tragedy struck the popular tourist town just as it was gearing up for the busy holiday season.
The aircraft, which took off from a regional airport in nearby Canela at 9:15 a.m., was en route to Jundiaí, São Paulo, when it went down minutes after takeoff.
“Sadly, initial reports indicate that the aircraft’s occupants did not survive,” Rio Grande do Sul Governor Eduardo Leite said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
the plane reportedly struck the chimney of a building and the second floor of a house before crashing into a furniture store, sending debris flying into a nearby bed-and-breakfast. At least 17 people on the ground were injured, with two in serious condition from burns, according to Governor Leite. Others were being treated for smoke inhalation.
Governor Leite stated that the flight encountered unfavorable weather conditions. Brazil’s aviation accident investigation center, Cenipa, has opened an inquiry into the cause of the crash and is analyzing the damage at the site.
Local media outlets showed images of flames and flying debris in the moments after the aircraft struck buildings in Gramado.The mountain resort town is a beloved destination for tourists, especially during the holiday season, drawing large crowds with its charming Christmas decorations.
This tragedy comes just months after Rio Grande do Sul State was devastated by torrential rains in May, causing one of Brazil’s worst floods in modern history and leaving more than 100 dead.
