[메디컬투데이=이승재 기자] Research has shown that a plant-based diet helps alleviate the side effects of prostate cancer.

The results of a study analyzing the effect of a plant-based diet on prostate cancer side effects were published in the journal Cancer.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), prostate cancer is the most common and fatal form of cancer in American men. Many factors, including aging, family history, obesity and hormone levels, are involved in the development of prostate cancer, and quitting smoking, exercise and sexual activity reduces the risk of developing prostate cancer.

Previous research has shown that a plant-based diet also helps prevent prostate cancer. According to another study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), a plant-based diet has the effect of slowing the progression of prostate cancer.

Researchers studied the effect of a plant-based diet on prostate cancer side effects in approximately 2,000 patients with early-stage prostate cancer. Typical side effects of prostate cancer include urinary incontinence, urinary disorders such as painful urination, bowel dysfunction, and sexual dysfunction.

Patients’ diets were classified into five types based on the ratio of animal to plant foods contained in the food consumed.

The study found that people who consumed more plant-based diets had 8% to 11% higher indicators of sexual function than those who consumed less. The urinary function index was up to 14% higher, and the index assessing side effects such as depression and facial flushing was up to 13% higher.

Based on these findings, the researchers concluded that a plant-based diet helps alleviate the side effects of prostate cancer.
