The event, held at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, also marks the return of Jermall Charlo, a former two-division champion. Charlo will face Thomas LaManna at 168 pounds.
Plant (23-2, 14 KOs), ranked No. 3 in the super middleweight division by ESPN, is heavily favored with opening betting odds of -2000 against Resendiz. Resendiz (15-2, 11 KOs), currently ranked No. 15 by the WBA, enters as the underdog.
Charlo (33-0, 22 KOs), who last fought in late 2023, is also a significant favorite at -1100 against LaManna, who is listed at +620. “I’ll be a fool to try to overlook him,” Charlo said of lamanna. “This is my legacy. This is my career. I’m putting it all on the line… The pressure is on me to be who I am. I’m not overlooking LaManna. he has some skill. He has experience, too. He just never been in there with anybody like me.”
LaManna, riding a nine-fight winning streak, sees this fight as a major prospect.
“I learned from the Erislandy Lara fight that I can’t let the moment get to me,” LaManna said. ”My whole mindset changed after the Lara fight… Now I’ve got that great opportunity… I definitely have the momentum over Charlo. We’re gonna find out on May 31.”
Plant, after a successful start to his career, faced Canelo alvarez in a title unification bout, suffering an 11th-round TKO loss. He rebounded with a win over Anthony Dirrell but then lost to David Benavidez in March 2023. In September 2024, Plant secured the interim WBA super middleweight belt with a knockout victory against Trevor McCumby.
