Bungie Announces Leadership Transition: Pete Parsons Steps Down, Justin Truman Named Studio Head
After over two decades with Bungie, Pete Parsons is stepping down as Studio Head, passing the leadership torch to Justin Truman. Parsons announced his departure in a message to the Bungie community, reflecting on his time growing the studio and its iconic franchises.
Parsons highlighted key achievements during his tenure, including the expansion of Destiny, the establishment of an independent live operations organization, and Bungie’s acquisition by Sony Interactive Entertainment. He expressed immense pride in the worlds built and the community fostered around Bungie’s games.
“This journey has been the honor of a lifetime,” parsons wrote. “I am deeply proud of the worlds we’ve built together and the millions of players who call them home – and most of all I am privileged by the opportunity to work alongside the incredible minds at Bungie.”
He praised Truman as the natural successor, citing his passion for Bungie, its team, and its players. Truman’s extensive experience spans engineering, production, design, and most recently, as General Manager for Destiny 2 and Chief Advancement Officer, making him instrumental in many of Bungie’s most memorable moments.
Parsons concluded his message with a whimsical nod to Peter Pan, stating, “As for me, I’ll be second star to the right and straight on till morning.”
Justin Truman’s vision for Bungie
Justin Truman’s response outlined his 15-year journey at Bungie, detailing his contributions across various roles. He spoke of his pride in the code he wrote for the original Destiny, his design work on Destiny 2 systems (acknowledging early missteps), and his role in launching Destiny’s Seasons.
Truman reaffirmed Bungie’s core purpose: “We create worlds that inspire friendship.” He emphasized the importance of collaboration with the player community and a commitment to delivering experiences that exceed expectations.
Acknowledging past shortcomings, Truman assured the community that Bungie learns from feedback and strives to improve. He expressed his dedication to supporting the entire team and continuing to pour their hearts into both Destiny and the upcoming Marathon.
“I’ve also been part of these efforts at Bungie when we’ve maybe not been at our best. When we’ve stumbled and realized through listening to our community that we had missed the mark. I no I’ve personally learned a lot over the years, as have all of us here, from those conversations,” Truman stated.
Truman concluded by expressing gratitude for the community’s passion and outlook, signing off with “For Audacity to Astra,” a nod to Bungie’s ethos.
Looking Ahead
Both Parsons and Truman’s messages indicate a period of transition and continued development at Bungie. The studio is currently focused on both Marathon and Destiny, with plans to share more updates later this year.
