Rescue operations have been suspended for a 10-year-old boy who fell into a concrete pillar buried underground while picking up scrap metal in Vietnam’s Dong Thap province. Because the boy was presumed dead.

Rescue authorities have since started erecting concrete pillars to recover the body, but are experiencing difficulties.

According to local media VN Express on the 7th, Tai Li Hao-nam, who turned 10 this year, fell into a concrete pillar buried underground while collecting scrap metal with neighbors at a bridge construction site near Provincial Road 857 in Dong Thap Province . The concrete column is 35m long and 25cm in diameter.

To prevent damage to the concrete pillar, authorities sprayed water through a hose to weaken the ground around it and excavate the soil.

Eventually, five days after the accident, the boy was pronounced dead and the rescue operation was abandoned. After that, they started to collect the bodies, but they have difficulties because the pillars are embedded deep in the ground, they have a small diameter, and there is a lack of experts.

Rescue authorities turned to Japanese disaster relief experts for help. They suggested attaching cables to three sections of the column and lifting it using a hydraulic jack.

However, due to a lack of equipment, it will take time to start the work, said Doan Tan Vu, deputy governor of Dong Thap Province.
