PLN EPI and Papua Bersama Konsorsium Sign JDA for Gasification Project in Papua to Strengthen Gas Supply Chain
Indonesia’s Energy Future: PLN EPI Partners to Bring Gas Power to Papua
Papua, Indonesia – In a move to bolster Indonesia’s energy security and transition to cleaner energy sources, PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) has signed a landmark agreement with Papua Bersama Konsorsium for a major gasification project in northern Papua. The Joint Advancement Agreement (JDA),signed on december 2nd,paves the way for the construction of vital midstream LNG infrastructure to fuel power plants in the region. This initiative is expected to substantially enhance energy reliability and support Indonesia’s national energy independence.”This strategic partnership is a crucial step towards ensuring a cleaner, more sustainable, and domestically-sourced energy supply for northern Papua,” said Iwan agung Firstantara, Director of PLN EPI. “This project is not just about building gas infrastructure; it’s about forging strong synergies between stakeholders to guarantee energy security in Eastern Indonesia.”
Firstantara emphasized PLN EPI’s commitment to a reliable and efficient energy supply chain, particularly as the nation transitions towards cleaner energy sources. By prioritizing gas as a cleaner option to fossil fuels, PLN EPI aims to play a leading role in Indonesia’s journey towards net-zero emissions by 2060.
“We believe gas plays a vital role as a transitional energy source, helping to reduce carbon emissions,” Firstantara added. “This project not only strengthens energy resilience in northern Papua but also supports Indonesia’s broader goals for sustainable energy transition.”
The enterprising project will support seven major power plants with a combined capacity of 168 MW, requiring an average gas supply of 20.83 BBTUD over the next 20 years.
Two Floating Storage Regasification Units (FSRUs) will be strategically located in Jayapura and Biak, while two Onshore Storage Facilities will be built in Manokwari and Nabire. This infrastructure will ensure a stable and efficient gas supply to the region. The seven power plants slated to benefit from this project include PLTMG Manokwari 2 (20 MW), MPP Nabire (23 MW), PLTMG Nabire 2 (10 MW), MPP Jayapura (50 MW), PLTMG Jayapura Peaker (40 MW), PLTMG Biak (15 MW), and PLTMG Biak 2 (10 MW).
PLN EPI and Papua Bersama Konsorsium, a consortium comprising PT Pertamina Internasional Shipping, PT PGN LNG Indonesia, PT Enviromate technology International, and PT APCA tirta engineering, will collaborate on all aspects of the project, from technical validation and engineering design to permitting, financial modeling, and overall project management.
Eka Suhendra, Director of Business Planning at PT Pertamina Internasional Shipping, highlighted the project’s significance as a testament to the power of collaboration between state-owned enterprises.”This project presents a tremendous chance to strengthen national energy security,” Suhendra stated. “With the consortium’s combined expertise and technical capabilities, we are confident this project will deliver notable benefits, not only for the energy sector but also for the people of Papua.”
Powering Papua: A Conversation with PLN EPI Director on the Region’s Gasification Future
