[PODCAST JOI ITO – The Road to Change- Vol.46]Continued: Thinking about NFT and DAO with Akihiro Nishino-What are interesting ways to use it that are not just about making money? ~

Joi Ito, former director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Media Lab and co-founder of Digital Garage, serves as the moderator of the podcast “PODCAST JOI ITO -The Road to Change-“. Continuing from last week, Akihiro Nishino from the comedy duo “King Kong” appeared.

Mr. Nishino has realized various ideas using the latest technology, such as division of labor in the production of picture books and the letter pot service that turns letters into currency. We3 seems to have a lot of potential too.

Akihiro Nishino (from now on, Nishino): Everyone is trying to add value to NFTs in different ways, and I think they are all creative and “interesting.” Two months ago, I went to an NFT event in New York. So I went to a DJ character NFT event held in a corner of the city. When I went in, I thought, “I don’t need this (NFT character).” In that event, the DJ character and the person doing the live painting got together and started live painting while having a DJ battle. So at the end, the audience voted which one was better, but in doing, they cheered me on and I totally wanted this NFT. I think I’m good at it. I thought it was a good idea. You don’t have to say “only appears on OpenSea”.

Joichi Ito (hereafter referred to as Ito): Memories of real experiences are important, aren’t they? This is called POAP (Proof of Presence Protocol). For example, there is a famous live house event hosted by the Sex Pistols, and an unbelievable number of people claim to have gone to that concert. But there are people who really wanted to experience it, right? That’s why I think it’s quite important to have an NFT that says ‘I was here’ and it can only be found there.

Nishino: It’s interesting that you can’t get it if you don’t go there. I think, “Everyone is trying to create value like that.”

Ito: Interesting. But in the future, I think there will be a lot of ingenuity that cannot be imagined now.

Nishino: It’s very interesting now. There will be many failures.

Ito: Right now, you know which NFT everyone has. For example, if you say, “There are people coming to this event who have NFTs. Raise your hands.” Therefore, it is quite possible to publish “this person’s NFT and this person’s cooperation” only for those people. Then it becomes possible to do things like free tickets. When members of Mr. Nishino’s salon come to my event, you can get a special drink, and all of them can be verified with NFT. People who come will get a special NFT again, and those who have it can do different things, and it’s a bit like a game. By doing that, you can guide people’s actions a bit. You can do something like PokemonGo. If you come here now, you can get NFT. People with this NFT say it will be free next year. It can also be used for marketing.

Nishino: That’s right. Besides, I do a lot of real events. I hold events in large venues, and since I take pictures, I also do solo exhibitions. If you’re a real space person, you can’t help but include it.

Ito: That’s why, if you touch a real picture, you can get NFT. If you paste it on the picture, you can also issue NFT.

Nishino: Well, it’s interesting. No, I have to study properly.

— Joichi Ito has often called for ways to use NFTs other than just pasting JPGs in the program. By combining the ideas and contents of Mr. Nishino, he hopes to create new technologies and formats. In addition, Mr. Nishino himself says that most of the projects he undertakes are not to make money, but because they are interesting.

Ito: I think it’s great that we’ve gone to places like New York. I think it would be interesting to experiment with NFT to see if everyone would ride it if I brought it over there. The rest is just a twist. I’m good at that sort of thing. It’s not just a picture, but there’s an NFT that Masaki Fujihata made, but it’s an NFT that gets cheaper the more people buy it. You start selling at 1 million, and when two people want to buy it, it becomes 500,000. It’s kind of weird. That’s art, so I think it’s interesting to spin something with programming that’s different from normal NFT.

Nishino: That’s interesting. It sounds fun to think about.

Ito: That’s right. I think it’s the same with games, but it’s easy to imitate the previous game, but when a new format comes out, people will remember it. After all, if you do something that you have never used NFT like this before, your name will stick and I think it will grow quite a bit.

The show continued with brainstorming on different services. Remember to listen to the program for more information.
