Vadim Pokrovsky, a full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences who dedicated his career to the fight against AIDS, has died at the age of 71.

Pokrovsky led a specialized research laboratory focused on the epidemiology and prevention of AIDS beginning in the late 1980s. His work was instrumental in managing the early stages of the HIV epidemic within Russia.

According to an obituary from Rospotrebnadzor, the Russian federal consumer rights and public health watchdog, Pokrovsky stood at forefront of the fight against HIV infection in our country, working with the first cases and outbreaks of the disease.

Through his direct participation during the 1980s and 1990s, Pokrovsky contributed to the identification of patient zero. He also helped develop the methodology and system for combating HIV infection, which served as the foundation for the creation of a nationwide network of centers dedicated to the prevention and treatment of AIDS.

In addition to his clinical and organizational leadership, Pokrovsky was a prolific academic, authoring more than 700 books and scientific publications.
