Poland says Sweden and Finland will support if attacked before approval to join NATO

According to Reuters on the 19th (local time), Polish Prime Minister Matteusi Moraviecki said at a conference in Warsaw on the 19th that “Sweden and Finland’s accession to NATO is an important signal to strengthen European security. “I want to make it clear that I will support you if you are attacked during the process,” he said.

Sweden and Finland submitted applications for membership to NATO on the 18th, feeling uneasy about security due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Approval of these countries’ accession to NATO is expected to take several weeks.

According to NATO regulations, membership in a new member country requires unanimous approval from the existing 30 member countries.

The UK has also previously announced that these countries will sign a new security pact before they apply for NATO membership and will provide support in various ways if they are attacked.

Sweden and Finland also said they recently had discussions with some major NATO countries to secure security guarantees, and that they also received guarantees from the United States and Germany.

Poland also made it clear that it intends to provide a permanent base for NATO in the country.

“Permanent bases of allies should be built in countries on the eastern flank,” Prime Minister Moraviecki said. “he explained.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that Finland and Sweden’s accession to NATO does not pose a direct threat to their countries, but has warned that if NATO military infrastructure is deployed on their territories, there will be a response.
