Cryptocurrency users in Singapore have lost at least $195,000 to a rising wave of Apple impersonation scams, according to a police news release issued on August 21, 2026. At least five distinct cases have been reported since August 7, 2026, targeting individuals through deceptive pop-up notifications and unsolicited phone calls designed to steal digital asset credentials.

How the Apple Impersonation Phishing Scheme Operates

According to reporting from AsiaOne and The Straits Times, the scam begins when an Apple device user receives an unexpected pop-up notification claiming there have been unauthorized access attempts to their account. The notification prompts victims to change their Apple ID password. Shortly after the notification appears, targets receive an unsolicited phone call from fraudsters posing as members of Apple’s technical support team.

The incoming calls frequently display a +1 country code associated with North America, reinforcing the illusion of an official corporate communication. The callers allege that the victim’s Apple account or associated email has been severely compromised. Scammers then direct targets to fraudulent websites such as chat-apple.com or case-apple.com. On these malicious portals, victims are pressured into surrendering sensitive details, including Apple ID credentials, cryptocurrency account credentials, and one-time passwords.

Once the fraudsters obtain this sensitive data, they quickly gain entry into the victims’ cryptocurrency accounts or linked digital wallets. The stolen cryptocurrency assets are then swiftly transferred out by the scammers. The Straits Times noted that victims typically realize they have been defrauded only after discovering unauthorized cryptocurrency transactions logged on their accounts.

Broader Trends in Impersonation Fraud

This cryptocurrency variant is part of a broader surge in impersonation scams leveraging Apple’s ecosystem in Singapore. According to police advisories cited by The Straits Times, separate impersonation schemes utilizing Apple’s iMessage service cost victims nearly $2.2 million in less than two months. In those separate incidents, fraudsters posed as official institutions and courier services, including NinjaVan and SPX Express.

Official Guidance and Prevention Measures

Law enforcement and tech authorities emphasize that Apple will never ask users to disclose their Apple ID password, one-time passwords, or any login credentials via unsolicited phone calls, pop-up notifications, or online links. Users who receive unexpected password reset prompts are advised to immediately close the notification and access the device’s Settings application directly to verify their account status or update credentials.

Members of the public who receive suspicious communications are encouraged to contact the 24/7 ScamShield helpline at 1799. Anyone who suspects their cryptocurrency account has been compromised should contact their cryptocurrency service provider immediately to secure their accounts, according to police instructions.
