Citylink is designing a new data center in Wrocław that will capture waste heat from servers and pump it into the city’s municipal district heating network. The project, reported by Network World, aims to repurpose energy typically lost through cooling systems.

Tapping the Thermal Load of AI

The facility is a collaboration between Citylink and the local power company Kogeneracja. It is engineered for scalability: as computing power increases, the volume of energy available for recovery grows. This specific infrastructure is designed to manage the high thermal loads generated by cloud technology and AI nodes.

The shift comes as the explosion of artificial intelligence puts unprecedented demand for computing power. Michał Starybrat, development director at Citylink, says the project shows how digital infrastructure can integrate into a broader energy ecosystem.

From Server Exhaust to Home Heating

Traditional data centers dissipate heat via cooling systems. The Wrocław facility changes that flow. By integrating with a district heating network, it captures thermal energy and pumps it into the network.

Starybrat noted that the partnership with Kogeneracja provides valuable experience in designing and operating modern data centers, with a particular focus on infrastructure dedicated to AI nodes.

Exporting data center heat is an established practice. Network World reports similar initiatives already operating in the United Kingdom and New Zealand.
