Apple’s Evolution of Black Unity Watch Bands: A Decade of Celebrating Black Culture and Heritage

Since 2021, Apple has annually released special-edition black unity watch bands to honor and celebrate Black culture and history. Now in its fifth year, the series includes two sport bands, two sport loops, and one braided solo loop. Let’s take a look back at the genesis and evolution of these bands, and the stories they tell.

2021: The Inaugural Black Unity Sport Band

Apple kicked off this tradition with a meticulously crafted Black Unity Sport Band, retailing at $49. Paying homage to the Pan-African flag and quilt-making, this band was a celebration of resilience, bearing the words "Truth. Power. Solidarity." on its pin-and-tuck closure. The complementary Unity watch face showcased an ever-changing, irregular shapes pattern as users moved.

2022: Braiding History with the Black Unity Braided Solo Loop

In 2022, Apple introduced a braided solo loop version priced at $99, inspired by Afrofuturism. This design symbolized generations of Black people who have been both unseen and instrumental, advocating for a more equitable future.

2023: Mosaics of Unity with the Black Unity Sport Loop

With its 2023 offering, Apple explored the creative process of mosaic artistry. Priced at $49, the Black Unity Sport Loop embodied the vibrancy of Black communities and unity, featuring the Pan-African flag colors woven into a three-dimensional texture.

2024: Unity Bloom Sport Band – Blossoming Resilience

Apple returned to sport bands in 2024 with the Unity Bloom design, also $49. Each flower shape bore a hand-crafted appearance, symbolizing the commitment to cultivating a more equitable world where everyone can bloom.

2025: Rhythm Unites with the Unity Rhythm Sport Loop

The 2025 band, Unity Rhythm, priced at $49, uses adjustable, soft, and lightweight fabric to weave together the colors of the Pan-African flag in a stunning, shimmering lenticular effect. This design celebrates the unifying power of rhythm, from the beat of a heart to the flow of creativity.

More than Accessories: A Commitment to Community

Beyond these visual tributes, Apple’s Black Unity bands extend support to five global organizations. These groups focus on elements of rhythm, creativity, and community, providing meaningful mentorship to underrepresented artists and musicians.
