Poor Sleep Linked to Accelerated Brain Aging, Study Finds
People who consistently experience poor sleep may exhibit signs of accelerated brain aging, appearing, on average, one year older than their actual age, according to research published October 26, 2023. The study, leveraging data from the UK Biobank, suggests a link between sleep quality and brain health, wiht inflammation identified as a potential contributing factor.
Researchers examined data from 343 adults participating in the UK Biobank, a large-scale biomedical database and research resource. Participants self-reported their sleep duration, and researchers assessed brain age using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. The study found a meaningful correlation between poorer sleep and a higher estimated brain age.
To understand the biological mechanisms at play,the researchers also investigated levels of low-grade inflammation in the body. They determined that inflammation accounted for just over ten percent of the relationship between poor sleep and an older-appearing brain. This suggests that while inflammation is a factor, other mechanisms are also likely involved.
Our findings provide evidence that poor sleep may contribute to accelerated brain aging and point to inflammation as one of the underlying mechanisms,
stated Abigail Dove, a researcher involved in the study. As sleep is modifiable,it might potentially be possible to prevent accelerated brain aging and perhaps even cognitive decline through healthier sleep.
Possible Explanations Beyond Inflammation
The study authors propose several other potential pathways linking poor sleep to brain aging. These include disruptions to the brain’s glymphatic system – responsible for clearing waste products during sleep – and the impact of sleep deprivation on cardiovascular health, which is known to affect brain function. The glymphatic system, discovered in 2013 by researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center, operates most efficiently during sleep, removing metabolic waste products like amyloid-beta, a protein associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Poor sleep can contribute to hypertension, stroke, and other cardiovascular issues, all of which can negatively impact brain health and accelerate cognitive decline. A 2022 review published in the American Heart Association journal Circulation,detailed the bidirectional relationship between sleep disorders and cardiovascular disease.
Study Limitations and Future Research
The researchers acknowledge several limitations to their study. Participants in the UK Biobank tend to be healthier than the general UK population, possibly limiting the broad applicability of the findings.Additionally, the study relied on self-reported sleep data, which can be subject to recall bias and inaccuracies. Objective sleep measurements, such as polysomnography, would provide more precise data in future studies.
Further research is needed to fully elucidate the complex relationship between sleep,inflammation,and brain aging. Investigating the effectiveness of sleep interventions – such as cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) – in preventing or slowing cognitive decline is a crucial next step.
