Preparing for a Healthy Retirement: Importance of National Health Checks for Aging Population

[미디어파인 전문칼럼] As average life expectancy increases ahead of the age of super-aging, concerns about retirement preparation and healthcare are growing. As interest in healthy retirement preparation and wellness has increased, you need to pay more attention to the health of yourself and your family members, including aging parents, during this year’s Family Month.

A national health inspection project organized by the National Health Insurance Corporation is being implemented in Korea. The national check is carried out with the necessary elements based on age and sex, taking into account the average health status of people. In particular, since there are several items for the prevention of diseases that commonly occur in certain age groups, it is useful to know them in advance and add additional control items.

Those in their 20s and 30s represent a relatively healthy age group, but if they have a family history, they may be vulnerable to certain diseases, so it is best to identify disease risk factors early. Recently, the possibility of exposure to metabolic syndromes such as hypertension and diabetes, stomach cancer and colon cancer has increased due to irregular eating habits, alcohol consumption, stress and overwork, so it is better to start managing these problems early.

Since aging begins in earnest from the age of 40, systematic examination and management are necessary. A thorough workup is needed, including cardiovascular tests such as stroke and myocardial infarction and the five major cancer screenings (stomach cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer, cervical cancer and liver cancer). Compared to the test, you should recognize and manage your physical changes and especially check the main trends such as obesity, hypertension, cholesterol, anemia, kidney function and urine protein results to prevent the illnesses.

After the age of 60, the risk of serious and degenerative diseases increases. It is recommended to undergo regular check-ups every year and undergo MRI/MRI examination of the brain for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and dementia, which often appear in old age. Also, as bone density decreases, it is easy to fracture from small impacts due to osteoporosis, so it is recommended to get tested for osteoporosis regularly.

Regular health checks cannot be underestimated. You can prepare for a healthy retirement by understanding the possibility of illness and taking preventative measures. In particular, in recent years, due to various factors, the age of onset of cancer has been decreasing, moving from the elderly to middle-aged people and those in their 20s and 30s, so it is advisable to undergo periodic checks regardless of age. .

The accuracy of health check results may vary depending on various equipment and technologies, as well as the experience and expertise of medical personnel. It is important to get tested at a medical institution where professional medical staff is present and can provide systematic diagnosis and link to medical treatment through collaborative consultation.

This year, 2024, people born in even years are eligible for national health checks. As the number of bookings for health checks increases as the end of the year approaches, we hope that you and your family will receive health checks in advance during.
