Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva delivered a speech at the opening of Hannover Messe 2026 in Germany, emphasizing Brazil’s commitment to strengthening industrial cooperation with Europe and positioning the country as a key partner in sustainable manufacturing and technological innovation.
Speaking at the world’s largest industrial technology fair, Lula highlighted Brazil’s advancements in green energy, bioindustry, and digital transformation, calling for deeper integration between Brazilian industries and German engineering expertise. He underscored that collaboration in areas such as hydrogen production, electric mobility, and smart factories could drive mutual economic growth while supporting global climate goals.
Lula noted that Brazil has made significant progress in renewable energy, with over 85% of its electricity coming from clean sources, primarily hydropower, wind, and biomass. He pointed to the nation’s potential to become a major exporter of green hydrogen, citing ongoing projects in the Northeast region backed by public and private investment.
The Brazilian president also addressed concerns about trade barriers, urging European partners to recognize Brazil’s environmental and labor standards. He called for fair and reciprocal trade relations, rejecting protectionist measures that could hinder South-South and North-South cooperation in industrial development.
German officials, including Economy Minister Robert Habeck, welcomed Lula’s participation, describing Brazil as a strategic partner in the transition to a climate-neutral industrial base. Habeck noted that German companies are increasingly investing in Brazilian clean tech ventures, particularly in solar panel manufacturing and sustainable agriculture technology.
Hannover Messe 2026, held from April 20 to 24, features over 4,000 exhibitors from more than 70 countries, with a strong focus on decarbonization, artificial intelligence in manufacturing, and resilient supply chains. Brazil’s participation includes a national pavilion showcasing innovations from companies such as Petrobras, Embraer, and WEG, alongside startups from São Paulo’s innovation hubs.
Lula’s speech marked his first major appearance at a European industrial summit since returning to office in 2023. Analysts noted that the address signaled Brazil’s intent to re-engage with global industrial forums after a period of reduced international outreach during the previous administration.
The Brazilian government has positioned industrial modernization as a central pillar of its economic strategy, aiming to increase manufacturing’s share of GDP to 15% by 2030. Key initiatives include tax incentives for high-tech industries, expanded vocational training programs, and partnerships with research institutions to boost innovation in aerospace, defense, and bio-based materials.
As Hannover Messe continues through the week, Brazilian delegates are scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with German industry leaders and participate in forums on energy transition and digitalization. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation under the existing EU-Mercosul framework, pending final ratification of the trade agreement.
