[투나잇이슈] Bureau – Democratic Party, first preparatory meeting… The summit meeting should be held next week

The Office of the President and the Democratic Party of Korea held their first working meeting today (23) to prepare for the meeting between President Yoon Seok-yeol and Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung.

While the date, format and specific agenda of the meeting have not been confirmed, it is reported that an agreement in principle has been reached to discuss both people’s livelihood policies and key national issues.

It was decided to discuss the summit program again at a later date.

Let’s take a closer look at the political issues.

We invited Song Young-hoon, legal advisor of the People Power Party, and Cho Hyun-sam, chairman of the Gyeonggi Provincial Party Committee of the Democratic Alliance for Democracy.

Welcome.

The key word in today’s first edition is “summit discussion”. The first operational-level meeting for talks between President Yoon Seok-yeol and Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung was held. Hong Cheol-ho, the president’s new senior secretary for political affairs, and Chun Jun-ho, chief of staff to the Democratic Party leader, met for the first time at the National Assembly for 40 minutes. However, the date and format of the meeting have not yet been decided. First, when do you expect the summit to take place?

The agenda of the summit is interesting. Although an agreement in principle is said to have been reached to discuss both public livelihood policies and major national affairs issues, differences still remain in the positions of the ruling and opposition parties. First, Hong Ik-pyo, leader of the Democratic Party, stressed: “The president’s acceptance of the law on special prosecutor Chae Sang-byeong is the beginning of change.” What did you hear?

Additionally, the Democratic Party said it must provide answers to people’s livelihood issues, such as prices, and that it is considering “people’s livelihood support funds.” However, People Power Party acting chairman Yoon Jae-ok called for subsidies to recover people’s livelihoods to be “focused on current issues such as inflation measures.” During the last general election, Congressman Lee Jae-myung pledged to provide “250,000 won per person to all citizens.” How likely is it to be included in the summit agenda?

Meanwhile, Cho Kuk, leader of the Fatherland Innovation Party, made an open proposal to Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party. “Let’s hold a pan-opposition joint meeting before meeting President Yoon.” He said: “We will represent 192 seats of the pan opposition party, not the 175 seats won by the Democratic Party.” Why did Representative Cho Kuk suggest “holding a joint pan-opposition conference before the summit”? What do you think about the possibility of a real banquet?

The key word in today’s second issue is “non-capital management”. The People Power Party has decided to form a “management emergency response committee”. At today’s meeting of top elected officials who have served four or more terms, there were voices calling for a national convention to be held quickly. What do you think is the context in which the consensus of opinion is found on a management-type emergency committee rather than on an innovation-type emergency committee?

As for the emergency committee chairman, former MP Na Kyung-won said, “He is in a mid-level position, and replacement Jae-ok Yoon will contact him.” Yesterday, Acting President Yoon decided to recommend a new president by the 3rd of next month instead of refusing to become emergency president. There are 8 people in the fifth term or more, including MPs Joo Ho-young, Kwon Seong-dong and Kwon Young-se, and if you include the fourth term, there are 19 people. What type of person do you think is suitable to fill the role of chair of the emergency management committee?

The new emergency committee will decide the program of the national convention and the electoral method. The current method of representative election is “100% party member voting”. However, some in the party argue that it should be changed to “50% national opinion poll and 50% vote of party members”. Which do you think is more reasonable?

It is reported that former People Power Party emergency committee chairman Han Dong-hoon hosted a dinner with former emergency committee members last week. This was the first time I had gone out since I lost the general election. He also shared his thoughts so far. Referring to a time when he was demoted as a prosecutor in the past, he said: “I’m used to moments like this” and “I will develop my skills.” What do you think it means? Does this also indicate a return to politics after a political hiatus?

The key word in today’s third question is “legislative leadership”. Opposition parties, including the Democratic Party of Korea, independently drafted the Franchise Business Act and the Democratic Meritorious Persons Act at the Political Affairs Committee of the National Assembly. They requested that it be submitted directly to the plenary session of the National Assembly. This is the second time since the general election, following last week’s Second Grain Management Act.

The Democratic Party appears to be pushing hard on a number of controversial bills. What do you think?

Meanwhile, Democratic Party MP Jeong Seong-ho, considered one of MP Lee Jae-myung’s closest associates, officially announced his candidacy to become the next speaker of the National Assembly. Regarding his role as president of the National Assembly, he said: “You can’t do anything if you only maintain mechanical neutrality.” He also said: “We must lay the foundation invisibly for the Democratic Party to win in the next elections.” What do you think the meaning of this statement is?

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party will elect a new leader on the 3rd of next month. Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Min-seok, who won his fourth term in the general election, has hinted that he will not run for the leader’s post. His position is that he will “focus on the issue of the sovereignty of party members”, but this is interpreted to mean that he will not step forward as a floor leader who must coordinate within the National Assembly. If this happens, can pro-Myung circles predict that trafficking will be brought under control by Supreme Council member Park Chan-dae?

The Fatherland Innovation Party, which won 12 seats in the general election, has announced ambitions to form an internal negotiating group, but is still encountering difficulties. Another eight seats are not guaranteed, and the easing of bargaining group requirements promised by the Democratic Party during the election process is also slow. What do you think is the reason?
