[뉴스1번지] President Yoon Seok-yeol and Representative Lee Jae-myung hold their first meeting… Schedule and agenda of negotiations

With the conclusion of the first meeting between President Yoon Seok-yeol and Representative Lee Jae-myung, the two sides are coordinating specific dates and schedules.

It is being verified whether this summit will lead to a turning point in the political situation which continues to be extremely conflictual.

Let’s take a look at the news from the political world outside the two ministries.

Welcome to Lawyer Seo Jeong-wook and Jang Hyeon-joo, Vice Chairman of the Democratic Party Legal Committee.

After the crushing defeat in the general election, President Yoon declared: “I will not hesitate to do anything for the people’s livelihood” and left open the possibility of a leaders’ summit and a meeting with Lee Jae-myeong, leader of the Democratic Party, he concluded. What do you think is the backstory to the surprise meeting proposal?

The date and format of the meeting have not yet been determined. The Democratic Party believes that President Yoon’s proposal means a solitary meeting between the two, and the Office of the President has not yet mentioned the specific format. What direction do you think it should go?

The most important issue on the summit table will probably be the question of the population’s livelihood. Yesterday, Congressman Lee spoke about the issue of 250,000 won per capita as a subsistence subsidy, but in the political world there is speculation that the issue of confirming the candidate for prime minister could also be on the table.

In the past there have been several meetings between the president and the head of the opposition party. It was during the time of former President Kim Dae-jung that the most frequent summits took place, with a total of eight meetings. However, subsequent talks between the leaders were limited in number and had little results. What’s your perspective this time?

A poll conducted by Gallup Korea found that President Yoon’s approval rating for government affairs has fallen to 23%, the lowest ever recorded. This was a sharp decline of 11 percentage points from the poll three weeks ago, and the President’s Office said: “We will ensure that public sentiment is well taken into account in the management of state affairs.” Do you think the summit will have an impact on the recovery of approval ratings?

Meanwhile, the People Power Party’s failed candidates called for comprehensive party reform, insisting on re-establishing party-government relations, launching an innovative emergency committee, and revising the convention rules. What direction do you think should be taken to engage pro- and non-Yoon, Yeongnam and metro area legislators?

Behind-the-scenes competition for the position of the next Speaker of the National Assembly is intensifying within the Democratic Party. Congressman Jo Jeong-sik entered the race in earnest after resigning from his position as general secretary, and so did many prominent figures, including 5-term congressman Jeong Seong-ho, the “pro-name president” , are challenging the race. I’m also interested in knowing which candidate Rep. Lee Jae-myung will support.

Opposition parties, which will hold an absolute majority in the 22nd National Assembly, have already begun to unite. In particular, Representative Cho Kuk and Representative Lee Jun-seok attracted attention by holding a press conference together with the Democratic Party and others to urge the passage of the “Special Prosecutor Corporal Chae Law”. What do you think of this joint action?
