President Yoon’s Mother-in-Law Arrested in Court for ‘Fake’ Appeal: Judge Upholds Prison Sentence

President Yoon Seok-yeol’s mother-in-law, Choi Eun-soon, was arrested in court during her appeal trial for charges of forging bank account balance certificates. The judge upheld her one-year prison sentence from the initial trial, stating that the right to defense was adequately guaranteed and emphasizing the high level of illegality involved. This news comes from reporter Kim Ji-soo.

In the appeal case of Choi Eun-soon, the mother-in-law of President Yoon Seok-yeol, who was accused of forging private documents, she was sentenced to one year in prison by the Uijeongbu District Court. She was arrested in court, mirroring the lower court’s decision. The judge provided reasoning for the arrest, explaining that the right to defense was sufficiently protected during the appeal trial, and also highlighting the significant illegality and profits obtained from her criminal actions.

Previously, Choi was not arrested in court due to reasons such as her advanced age during the first trial. In relation to the case, Choi is accused of forging a balance certificate to falsely indicate a deposit of 34.9 billion won in a bank during a land purchase in Dochon-dong, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do in 2013. Additionally, she is charged with violating the Real Titles Act of Real Estate by collaborating with an accomplice to file a lawsuit for the return of a down payment, submitting a false balance certificate of about 10 billion won to the court, purchasing real estate, and registering the transfer of ownership under a title trust company and her son-in-law.

Upon hearing the sentence, Choi fainted and expressed her discontent with claims of unfairness, stating, “I didn’t do anything to make money.” When questioned by reporters before the appeals court sentencing, she refused to respond. The court found her guilty on all charges, including forging private documents and breaching the Real Name Act, and highlighted how she profited greatly while taking advantage of individuals and associated companies.

Uijeongbu District Court sentenced the mother-in-law of President Yoon Seok-yeol Choi Eun-soon to one year in prison and arrested her in court as in the lower court in the appeal case of Choi Eun-soon, mother-in-law of President Yoon Seok-yeol, who was accused of forging private documents.

The judge explained the reason for arresting the court, saying, “The right to defense was sufficiently guaranteed until the appeal trial, and the level of illegality and the profit obtained from the criminal act is very large.”

Previously, Mr Choi was not arrested in court for reasons such as his advanced age in the first trial.

Mr. Choi is accused of forging a balance certificate as if a total of 34.9 billion won was deposited in a bank in the process of buying land in Dochon-dong, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do in 2013.

He is also accused of violating the Real Titles Act of Real Estate by conspiring with a partner to file a lawsuit for the return of the down payment, submit to the court a false balance certificate of about 10 billion won, purchase real estate, and register the transfer of ownership in the name of a title trust company and son-in-law.

After the sentence, Mr. fainted. Choi while complaining of injustice, saying, “I didn’t do anything to make money.”

Mr Choi did not answer any questions from reporters regarding the charges before the appeals court sentencing.

“(Didn’t you know that the false balance statement was presented to the court as evidence in the lawsuit) …”

The court ruled that all the charges, including forging private documents and breaching the Real Name Act, were recognized, and pointed out that “while the defendant led and realized huge profits, the individuals and associated companies were taken advantage of.”
