President’s Remarks on Medical Reform Disappoint Medical Community and Patient Associations: Report

◀ Again ▶

The medical community was particularly interested in the president’s remarks today.

As for the medical sector, which has been in chaos for more than two months, I hoped that a solution would be reached, but I could not hear specific comments from the President.

Both the medical community and patient associations are unable to hide their disappointment.

Journalist Park So-hee broke the story.

It has been 9 weeks since the residents left the treatment site.

In the medical community, a forward-looking stance on the issue of increasing the number of medical schools was expected after the general elections.

However, the president’s comments were brief and there was no retreat.

“We will continue to push for medical reform, but we will be more careful and listen to reasonable opinions.”

“Continue to advance medical reform.”

These eight letters are interpreted as containing the desire to continue to increase the number of medical school students by 2,000 students.

The Medical Association has decided not to even issue an official comment on the matter.

“I expected you to mention the medical gap situation, but there was almost no content. I am very disappointed, I can only say this.”

Patients directly affected also complained that they no longer had anything to expect from both the government and the medical community.

“If this problem is not resolved somehow, we are faced with a situation in which we can no longer bear… According to patients, there is frustration with this situation in which every person has to fight the disease.”

It is reported that the Ministry of Health and Welfare will continue to attempt dialogue with the Residents’ Council and the Medical Association later this month.

However, if no agreement is reached, there is a possibility that the government will take a hard line, for example by resuming the “license suspension” from next month.

The problem is that there are fears that the current emergency medical care system will reach its limit by the end of April.

This is because the resignations of medical school professors who filled resident vacancies will take effect and it will become difficult for higher-level general hospitals with accumulated deficits to operate normally.

There is also great concern that mass repetition of medical students who have refused classes will become a reality.

The government has previously stressed that it will form a social consultative body to discuss issues related to legislative conflicts, but work behind the scenes is still ongoing.
