Workplace Risk Assessment: Ensuring Employee Safety and Compliance
Employers are legally obligated to safeguard the physical and mental well-being of their employees through thorough risk assessment and proactive prevention measures.
The Single Risk Assessment Document (DUERP)
Since 2001,French law mandates that all employers conduct a professional risk assessment to identify hazards within each work unit. This assessment is formalized in a Single Risk Assessment Document, commonly known as the DUERP (Document Unique d’Evaluation des Risques Professionnels).
The DUERP serves as the foundation for implementing corrective actions and improving working conditions. These actions can include:
- Workstation redesign
- Optimizing work association
- raising awareness through training
- Providing personal protective equipment (PPE)
Prevention Actions and PAPRIPACT
Based on the risk assessment, employers must define specific prevention actions. Companies with 50 or more employees are required to detail these actions in the PAPRIPACT (Annual Program for Prevention of Occupational Risks and Improvement of Working Conditions). Smaller companies (under 50 employees) must maintain a list of these actions within the DUERP itself.
Employers are responsible for adapting these measures to address evolving circumstances, special situations, and contextual changes, with the goal of continuously improving workplace safety. They bear the legal duty for ensuring compliance with all applicable health and safety regulations.
Proactive Prevention is Key
Beyond individual employee monitoring, protecting employee health relies heavily on proactive prevention of occupational risks.
DUERP Updates and Transmission
the DUERP, and the associated PAPRIPACT (or list of actions), must be updated at least annually in companies with 11 or more employees. Updates are also required whenever notable planning decisions impact health and safety conditions, working conditions, or when new information regarding risk assessment becomes available. The updated DUERP must be transmitted to AIST22 with each revision.
Assistance with DUERP Growth
Guidance and support are available to employers in developing and maintaining their Single Risk Assessment Document.
