Usha Vance, wife of U.S. Vice President JD Vance, is scheduled to make an official visit to Greenland from thursday to Saturday. The White House announced the visit on Sunday, March 23, which comes as Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in annexing the autonomous territory of Denmark.
according to a statement from the American presidency, the second lady will be traveling with her son and a delegation from the United States to visit historic sites, learn the Greenlandic heritage, and attend the Avannaata Qimussersu, the national Greenland Sled Dog Race.
The White House further stated that Ms. Vance and the delegation are enthusiastic about the idea of attending this monumental race and celebrating the Greenlandic culture and unity.
The timing of the visit has raised eyebrows, with outgoing Greenlandic Prime Minister Mute Egede denouncing what he called foreign interference
on Monday,March 24. Egede’s statement comes as Trump continues to express interest in the Danish territory.
Egede stated on Facebook that, It should be noted that our integrity and our democracy must be respected without any external interference.
He added that there would be no meeting
with the U.S.delegation, which, according to Egede, includes U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has also commented on the visit, telling the Greenlandic daily Sermitsiaq that Usha Vance’s trip cannot be considered independently of public declarations that have been made
by Trump.
We want to work with the Americans, the Danish politician said in the newspaper. But this must and must be cooperation based on the essential values of sovereignty and respect between countries and peoples. This is something we take seriously. dialog with the United States concerning Greenland will take place in close coordination between the Danish government and the future Greenlandic government.
Since returning to the forefront of U.S. politics, Trump has repeatedly voiced his desire to acquire Greenland, even suggesting the use of force. The Arctic territory, approximately four times the size of France, holds strategic importance due to its location, which offers the shortest route for potential missiles between the U.S. and Russia, and its mineral resources.
In mid-March, Trump stated that the annexation by the United States would ultimately arrive
and would promote international security.
During his first term in office from 2017 to 2021,the Republican leader had previously floated the idea of purchasing Greenland,a proposal that was rejected by both Danish and Greenlandic authorities.
