New Delhi – Concerns over declining trust in the media and the proliferation of misinformation were central themes at the National Press Day function held today,as Press Council of India (PCI) Chair Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai emphasized the critical role of journalists in upholding accuracy and responsibility.
Challenges Facing the Press
Justice Desai highlighted the “loss of press credibility” as the most pressing challenge facing the Indian press. She attributed this, in part, to the “arbitrary use of technology in mass communication” which has facilitated the rapid spread of misinformation. This sentiment echoes broader global concerns about the impact of digital platforms on journalistic integrity; a Reuters Institute report found declining trust in news across multiple countries.
“The responsibility of journalists in such trying times has become more onerous,” Desai stated, stressing that reporting an event is only the first step. Journalists must also “verify facts, interpret them accurately and place them in outlook and not create news.”
Prioritizing Accuracy and Responsibility
Desai underscored the importance of prioritizing accuracy over speed and truth over trends. This call for deliberate journalism comes as news cycles accelerate and the pressure to publish quickly intensifies. The PCI has responded by updating its Norms of Journalistic Conduct to reflect these concerns, calling for greater care and responsibility in reporting.
She specifically urged journalists to exercise restraint when reporting on sensitive topics such as religion and the armed forces, where even minor inaccuracies could have significant repercussions. This aligns with established journalistic ethics regarding the potential for harm caused by irresponsible reporting in these areas.
Financial Independence and the Rise of AI
Recognizing the link between financial stability and journalistic independence, Desai announced that the PCI has advised state and Union territory governments to develop and implement group insurance schemes for journalists. this initiative aims to bolster the financial security of journalists, perhaps reducing external pressures that could compromise their reporting.
Looking ahead, Desai also cautioned journalists to remain vigilant regarding the increasing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in journalism. She emphasized that technology should be used to *find* the truth, not to distort or obscure it. “However advanced these tools may become, they can never replace the human mind - the judgment, conscience and sense of responsibility that guide every journalist to prevent the spread of misinformation,” she said.
The integration of AI into newsrooms presents both opportunities and challenges. While AI can assist with tasks like data analysis and transcription, concerns remain about the potential for algorithmic bias and the creation of “deepfakes” – manipulated media that can be tough to detect. A Knight foundation report details these opportunities and perils.
