Prof. Seong-ro Yun, former chairman of the 4th industrial revolution alone, plagiarized… I will take responsibility

Seoul National University professor Yoon Seong-ro (pictured), who served as chairman of the Presidential Committee on the Fourth Industrial Revolution under the Moon Jae-in administration, admitted plagiarizing a thesis. A paper submitted by a research team at Seoul National University to CVPR, one of the world’s three major artificial intelligence (AI) international conferences, was found to have been plagiarized from other papers.

The allegation of plagiarism began with a video released on YouTube on the 24th. A video publisher named ‘E2V-SDE (Parody)’ uploaded a 7-minute and 16-second video titled ‘E2V-SDE or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Plagiarism’ on the 24th. The video contains content that proves that the research paper submitted by Professor Yoon’s research team to the CVPR conference has plagiarized other papers.

According to the Korea Economic Daily, Professor Yoon, who recognized the controversy, acknowledged plagiarism and withdrew the thesis on the 24th after checking the circumstances of the war. Professor Yoon said, “He will not escape responsibility.” Professor Yoon has informed the disciplinary committee of Seoul National University of plagiarism.

In addition, Professor Yoon added, “This is the sole action of the first author.” A total of 5 people are registered as co-authors of the thesis. Professor Yoon directed the writing of the thesis as an advisor. Professor Yoon explained, “Several co-authors made an article together and sent it to the first author, but instead of the text randomly sent by the student, they copied expressions from other papers.” He continued, “I have withdrawn the thesis written by the first author student and the two thesis under review.” Currently, the first author student is in the United States to attend CVPR.

It is known that the thesis was submitted to CVPR around November of last year. Some say that the authority of the academic conference may have been undermined in that CVPR did not check whether the paper was plagiarized or not.

CVPR is an international academic conference for artificial intelligence hosted by the International Society of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the International Computer Vision Foundation (CVF). It is considered one of the three major academic societies in CVPR, which started in 1983, was held both online and offline in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA from June 19 to 24 this year.
