Neubrandenburg faces a 23.1 million euro deficit in its upcoming 2026 budget, prompting the Projekt NB voter association to submit sweeping proposals to sell a municipal parking garage and downsize the city administration, according to the Nordkurier.
Selling the Pferdemarkt Parking Garage
The four-member faction wants to sell the parking garage at Pferdemarkt under clear rules. Opened in 2022 as an approximately 10-million-euro construction project, the facility has written red figures every year, the group stated. The building is operated by the Neubrandenburger Wohnungsgesellschaft (Neuwoges), a municipal housing subsidiary.
Neuwoges Managing Director Frank Benischke confirmed to the Nordkurier last year that the revenue situation remains unsatisfactory. In 2024, the facility missed revenue targets by 400,000 euros, with previous years showing even larger deficits. The garage was originally built to expand central parking options, but lower-than-expected utilization prompted the renewed call for a sale.
Trimming Administrative Staff Without Layoffs
Projekt NB also proposes reducing the Neubrandenburg city administration by 100 positions by the year 2029. No one should be fired for this.
Projekt NB emphasized, noting that staff members who retire would simply not be replaced automatically. Mandatory tasks and security sectors are excluded from the cuts.
The faction estimates the city could save around 8.4 million euros annually at full effect while modernizing digital workflows. Neubrandenburg is expected to shrink every year, and the administration has to keep up.
the group argued.
Weighing Major Municipal Projects Against Each Other
The faction’s most high-impact proposal targets the city council meeting scheduled for December 17, 2026. Projekt NB wants to compare four major undertakings directly: the planned construction of a new indoor swimming pool, the digital innovation center at the Lokschuppen area, the upcoming renovation of the Jahnsportforum, and the construction of the South Elementary School. The city would ultimately select only one project to pursue.
Anyone who opens four construction sites at the same time often ends up with four ruins.
Project NB
Faction leader Roman Kubetschek told the Nordkurier that this comparative evaluation holds top priority. Before new contracts are signed, we need an honest comparison of costs, subsidies, follow-up costs and needs.
Kubetschek said, adding that the decisions involve the most money and will impact the city for decades. The faction favors prioritizing the Jahnsportforum renovation because sports and cultural events attract outside visitors and bring revenue into municipal coffers.
Upcoming City Council Decisions on October 15
City representatives will gather at the House of Culture and Education at 3 p.m. on October 15, 2026, to address 24 agenda items in the public session. Discussions will include the double-entry budgetary plan for 2027 and the scheduled takeover of local bus services starting January 1, 2027, by the district-owned Mecklenburg-Vorpommersche Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVVG), as reported by the Nordkurier.
