Promoting Adult Immunization: A Key to Preventing Disease and Enhancing Public Health

World Immunization Week falls from 24 to 30 April each year. This year, the World Department of Health (WHO) has set the theme “Humanly Possible: Saving Lives Through Immunization” to highlight the importance of strengthening immunity to prevent vaccine-related disease and death – preventable diseases Ready to conduct an immunization campaign that covers all age groups, reducing the risk of disease and the severity of the disease.

Dr. Busakorn Maharakhanukroh, MD Medical Director of GlaxoSmithKline (Thailand) Co., Ltd. or GSK said that GSK, as a leading global biopharmaceutical company, attaches importance to promoting people’s health and quality of life. GSK is committed to researching innovative medicines and vaccines to be at the forefront of disease prevention and is ready to support all sectors in the campaign for people to understand the importance of immunization for good health

“GSK has worked with various agencies to promote public awareness of the need and benefits of immunizing adults with the same vaccine as children. This is because adults or older adults have weakened immune systems as they age and are at greater risk of infections and complications. Preventing infection is therefore advantageous compared to health problems if the infection has already occurred,” said Dr. Busakorn.

The fact that fewer adults are vaccinated will have implications for overall health problems. Because Thailand is currently a completely aging society. The number of adults age 60 and older is increasing, and this population represents a major force for economic development. Data from the Administrative Registration Bureau, Department of Provincial Administration, Ministry of the Interior, as of December 2023, found that Thailand has 13,006,493 elderly people aged 60 years and above nationwide, accounting for 20, 06% of the total population. There are 8,853,566 elderly people aged 65 and over, equal to 13.66% of the total population

“Vaccinating adults reduces the risk of disease and reduces overall healthcare costs. This World Immunization Week we want to highlight the importance of immunization for adults. Effectively address the trend of population aging and promote good health among older people. We need to change from “patient care” to “preventive healthcare”, immunization in adults is therefore an important approach,” concluded Dr. Busakorn.

The Infectious Diseases Association of Thailand Vaccination has been recommended for adults and the elderly. To strengthen immunity and reduce the risk of developing diseases that can be prevented with vaccines, for example the flu vaccine, the shingles vaccine and the cervical cancer vaccine. Dengue fever vaccine and pneumococcal vaccine, etc.
