ProPublica Seeks Newsrooms for Local reporting Network Expansion
ProPublica is accepting proposals for the next cohort of its Local Reporting Network (LRN),furthering its commitment to local journalism. The initiative, a key part of ProPublica’s 50 State Initiative, aims to partner with one newsroom in every state by 2029.
The deadline for newsrooms to apply is july 21 at 5 p.m. ET. Reporters chosen for the one-year program will commence work Oct. 1, 2025. this round of applications is open to newsrooms in 35 states, as detailed on ProPublica’s eligibility map.
Through the LRN partnership, ProPublica will reimburse selected news organizations for the reporter’s salary, up to $75,000 plus benefits. The goal is to enable full-time focus on accountability journalism projects within their communities.ProPublica also provides editing, data, research, visual storytelling, and audience engagement support.
Sarah Blustain, an assistant managing editor at ProPublica, emphasized the importance of the Local Reporting Network. “It’s thrilling to see ProPublica’s Local Reporting Network reach newsrooms in all regions of the country,” Blustain said. “With each additional state, we are able to bring urgent local issues to readers nationwide.”
The 50 State Initiative bolsters ProPublica’s local and regional efforts, including reporting hubs across the Midwest, south, southwest, and Northwest. It also includes an investigative unit in Texas, in collaboration with The Texas Tribune. ProPublica currently has over 25 staff reporters and more than 20 reporting partnerships dedicated to regional and local accountability reporting.
The LRN, established in January 2018, seeks to address the shortage of investigative reporting at the local level. To date, it has fostered partnerships with approximately 80 news organizations nationwide.

ProPublica will review applications and select the next five newsroom partners, continuing its mission to strengthen local journalism and accountability across the United States.
