Protect Yourself: The Rising Threat of Skin Cancer and How to Detect It Early

As summer approaches, you need to pay attention to protection from UV rays. Ultraviolet rays are a Class 1 carcinogen designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) and cause deadly skin cancer when exposed directly.

According to the Health Insurance Review and Evaluation Service, the number of domestic patients suffering from skin cancer increased by more than 40% over the five years from 2016 to 2021. In particular, in 2022, the number of patients with Skin cancer in Korea reaches 27,000.

Caucasians are known to have a higher incidence of skin cancer than Asians, and according to Cancer Research UK, skin cancer kills 2,340 Britons every year. In particular, melanoma, the most serious skin cancer, is diagnosed 16,000 times a year. Melanoma is a malignant form of melanocytes or nevus cells (spots) and is highly malignant.

Skin cancer spreads rapidly before it is detected, and like other cancers, survival rates increase when symptoms are detected early. According to the British newspaper The Sun, experts recommend looking not only at the hands but also at areas less exposed to UV rays, such as the feet, to detect the symptoms of skin cancer.

In particular, in Koreans, malignant melanoma frequently occurs on the hands, toes, palms, and soles, which are less related to UV exposure. Specifically, symptoms appear such as blackheads on the soles of the hands or feet or vertical black lines on the nails.

However, in the early stages of skin cancer, it appears similar to dermatitis or resembles a normal mole, so it is often confused. Additionally, the diagnosis may be delayed because it is not considered a big problem.

The most common sign of malignant melanoma is the appearance of a new mole or the appearance of an existing mole that loses color. The area where malignant melanoma appears may vary depending on gender. For women, the most common specific position is the legs. Men are more likely to develop melanoma on their back or torso.

Symptoms that may indicate melanoma are as follows:

A mixture of different colors

The dot size increases

The shape of the dot changes

swelling of moles

bleeding from the mole

The area where the mole is located is itchy.
