Approximately 140 migrants arrived on the Hampshire coast in Portsmouth after crossing the English Channel on a single dinghy on September 6, 2026, prompting a major emergency response and demonstrations involving hundreds of protesters. The vessel was intercepted south of the Isle of Wight and brought ashore near Eastney, where demonstrators attempted to block routes away from the area.

Emergency services deployed two RNLI lifeboats, a HM Coastguard helicopter, and a HM Coastguard aeroplane to intercept the small boat after it headed toward the Hampshire coast, according to a Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokesperson. Border Force, Border Security Command, Hampshire Police, and South Central Ambulance Service also responded to the incident.

The French maritime prefecture of the Channel and the North Sea stated that around 140 migrants set out on a small boat from the west of the Baie de Seine overnight on Saturday. The French maritime prefecture noted that the departure was unusual for the area, as small boats typically launch from further up the French coast near Dunkirk, and added that the boat continued its journey toward the United Kingdom after people on board refused assistance.

Protests and Police Response in Portsmouth

More than 500 demonstrators gathered near Eastney Marina and Eastney Beach, with some participants attempting to block traffic along the roads leading away from the port. Video footage shared on social media showed police officers carrying riot shields forming blockades as protesters shouted slogans.

Hampshire Police issued a dispersal order effective through the evening of Monday, September 7, 2026, and urged individuals to avoid the area. The force stated that anyone refusing to comply with directions to leave was liable for arrest.

Daniel Thomas, also known as Danny Tommo, who live-streamed from the beach at Eastney, was present at the scene. A government spokesperson condemned the demonstrations, stating that the right to peaceful protest must never cross a line into disorder and thanking emergency services for managing the situation.

Political Reaction and Processing Plans

Political figures responded quickly to the landing on the Hampshire coast. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage posted on social media that a boat had launched from Baie de Seine, 170 miles from Calais, and arrived on the beaches of Hampshire for the first time. Reform UK economic spokesman Robert Jenrick characterized the arrival as an invasion.

Conservative MP for Isle of Wight East Joe Robertson called the crossing extremely concerning and stated he would contact the Home Office to determine if new routes are being utilized by people smugglers.

Hampshire Police confirmed that Border Force advised them that the individuals who disembarked would be transported out of Hampshire for processing at the Manston immigration centre in Kent in the normal manner.
