Updated June 04, 2025
The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) witnessed a critically important rally Wednesday, with shares climbing by 1,300 points as investors anticipate the upcoming budget announcement on June 10.The KSE-100 index closed at 121,798.86, marking a gain of 1,347.99 points, or 1.12%.
Sana Tawfik, head of research at Arif Habib Limited, attributed the positive momentum in the stock market too the approval of a new financial package between Pakistan and the Asian Growth Bank (ADB). The ADB has approved an $800 million program aimed at strengthening fiscal sustainability and improving public financial management in Pakistan.
According to the ADB, this program includes a $300 million policy-based loan and a $500 million policy-based guarantee, which is expected to mobilize up to $1 billion in financing from commercial banks. Tawfik also noted that attractive stock valuations, resulting from a recent correction phase, and increased institutional buying have contributed to the market’s upward trend.
Yousuf M. Farooq, director of research at Chase Securities, stated that the market has reached an all-time high as participants disregard any negative budget-related news. He added that expectations are growing for continued economic stability and a gradual decrease in interest rates, which would allow stock market price-to-earning (PE) ratios to increase.
“The market has hit an all-time high as participants brush off any negative budget-related news flow,” Yousuf M. Farooq, director of research at Chase Securities, said.
Farooq believes the market is entering the second phase of a bull run, characterized by increased public involvement, rising stock market volumes, gradual PE multiple expansion, and clearer signs of economic recovery. He anticipates growth in investor confidence, media attention, and new IPO activity.
Farooq emphasized that measures such as reduced taxation to boost corporate earnings, along with adherence to IMF guidelines, will further reinforce confidence. He also noted that steps towards mass digitization would positively influence stock market sentiment.
What’s next
Market analysts suggest that the PSX will likely remain bullish in the short term, contingent on the budget announcement aligning with market expectations and continued positive economic indicators.
