Understanding Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
Pulmonary embolism (PE), a blood clot that travels to the lungs, is a serious and possibly fatal condition. Each year, over half a million people in the United States are hospitalized due to PE, and approximately one in five high-risk patients succumb to the illness, according to the American Heart Association’s 2025 statistical update. PE is currently the third leading cause of cardiovascular death in the U.S.
Addressing Gaps in PE Care
Despite advancements in medical care, pulmonary embolism remains substantially underdiagnosed, undertreated, and managed inconsistently across healthcare settings. This variability in care contributes to preventable deaths and complications. The American Heart Association recognizes these critical gaps and is taking action to improve outcomes for patients with PE.
The American Heart Association’s new Initiative
To tackle these challenges, the american Heart Association is launching a three-year quality improvement initiative. This program, supported by Inari, now part of Stryker, will focus on identifying and overcoming barriers to optimal PE care. The initiative will concentrate on improving the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care processes for patients with pulmonary embolism.
The initiative aims to standardize best practices and ensure that all patients, irrespective of location or healthcare provider, receive the highest quality of care for this life-threatening condition. Specific areas of focus will likely include early detection protocols, appropriate use of anticoagulation therapy, and thorough post-discharge follow-up plans.
Why This Initiative Matters
Improving PE care is crucial for several reasons:
- Reducing Mortality: More effective diagnosis and treatment can significantly lower the risk of death from PE.
- Preventing Complications: Prompt and appropriate care can minimize long-term complications, such as chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH).
- Improving Quality of Life: Better management of PE can help patients regain their quality of life and return to their normal activities.
- Addressing Disparities: The initiative can help identify and address disparities in PE care, ensuring equitable access to optimal treatment for all patients.
