The expansion follows a strong financial performance in the first half of the year, driven by steady revenue growth and an operational turnaround in the United States after a brand integration.

Revenue and Member Growth Figures for the First Half of 2026

According to the company update, Puregym’s total revenue jumped six per cent in the first half of the year to reach £393m. Pre-tax earnings rose 18 per cent to £193m during the same period. The group also reported that its total member count grew by three per cent, bringing the global total to 2,442,000 members. The first-half results marked the inaugural update delivered by Alex Wood in his role as chief executive. Wood previously served as the group’s finance chief before stepping up to replace Clive Chesser. Chesser had joined Puregym in November 2024 during negotiations for the Blink Fitness acquisition.

US Turnaround and International Expansion Plans

The financial results coincided with a notable turnaround in the United States following a corporate rebrand and the integration of the Blink Fitness chain. According to the firm’s figures, profit in the US region surged 35 per cent to top £8.8m. Building on this momentum, the group opened 17 new sites globally in the first half of the year and remains on track to hit its target of 60 total new openings for 2026. Chief Executive Alex Wood identified a whitespace target across existing markets and the Republic of Ireland, estimating that another 750 sites could be opened over the coming years. The firm expects to enter the Irish market, starting in Dublin, from early 2027.

Changing Consumer Behavior and Industry Context

According to Wood, the long-term prospects of the fitness sector remain extremely attractive as consumers place an ever-greater importance on health and wellbeing. He noted that gym membership penetration continues to rise across core markets, with the value segment capturing an increasing share of that growth. Orr noted that Gen-Z members are increasingly determined to look and feel strong alongside focusing on mental health benefits. Founded in 2009 by Peter Roberts, Puregym is backed by private equity firms Leonard Green & Partners and KKR.
